Writing as an Act of Faith

Writing itself is an act of faith, and nothing else. -EB White

It's always lurking there, sometimes in the background and sometimes right out in front. It's that awful fear. Am I just wasting my time? Is this even worth it? What if I never succeed?

You know what I want? Some kind of guarantee. A guarantee that all the work I have put in and will put in will eventually pay off in some way. I want to know I'm not just wasting my time. You know. I want an angel to come down from heaven and tell me I'm doing the right thing. Yeah. Not gonna happen. Sometimes (most of the time, actually) you just have to go on faith.

So that's what I'm going to do. I'm writing as an act of faith. I'm going to choose to believe that my Father in Heaven did not give me this desire and talent in vain, that my writing actually means something to someone, even if it's just to me. I'm going to believe that it matters. I'll take it on faith. Faith has never failed me.

It's something all writers deal with--at least all the ones I know.

That's beautiful, Angie. I think you're right though, life takes a lot of faith and why should writing be any different! Have faith because you are talented!

Wow, Angie! I was just thinking that very thing this morning. *blush* How funny. I guess we all do wonder that.

Something I try to remember is that even if I never get published, and no one but me ever reads my writing, I still love it. Writing for me is like TV for some. I enjoy the process.
Ok, there is a bit more headdesk going on for writers than for TV watchers, but still.
I write for me.

*clap!* I'm so glad you're going forward with faith. I have faith that you'll make it. To me, in so many ways, you already have.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who has those days!

I'm trying hard to believe it matters. I'm struggling with that faith right now. Going forward with faith - I thank you for helping me remember to do that. I also write better when I say a prayer before I begin.

This was a beautiful post. It's so easy to get sucked into those feelings of "is it worth it?" I just ask my characters. They wouldn't exist if it wasn't for me. And that helps me write on.

You know, many writers at some point in their careers ask themselves this very question. And you answered it with faith. Awesome. I'm so glad I found your blog. :)

It is an act of faith! I love your writing, you should keep going because you'll regret it someday if you stop! At least I can say that I tried, even if it doesn't get me anywhere. I love the journey of it: meeting writers and sharing our work!

Angie--Thanks for becoming a follower of my blog. :)

Sometimes I wish someone would tell me point blank...talent or no talent.

I fight the demons of doubt too!

Often I have to remind myself that I need to write for own sanity and would write regardless if it'll ever pay off or not.
